The Mavericks face a dilemma with the first pick of the draft. They can select Cooper Flagg, a player touted as a generational talent, or they can trade him for a superstar of the caliber of Giannis Antetokounmpo. Stephen A. Smith gave his opinion.

Nobody expected them to be there, and yet the Dallas Mavericks inherited the first pick in the next draft. They only had a 1.8% chance of walking away with the grail, but the basketball gods were generous with these fans who have suffered so much in recent months. Luka Doncic’s departure was not in vain, and the rebuilding process can now begin.

But the question in NBA microcosm since the lottery is whether Nico Harrison will keep this coveted pick, or use it to pick up a superstar already established in the league. With Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis aging, and the point guard seriously injured, they probably won’t have time to wait for Cooper Flagg’s emergence to claim the title.

Stephen A. Smith on Cooper Flagg’s profile

With the arrival of a Giannis Antetokounmpo or a Kevin Durant, the shooting window would be much shorter, but also more open. It’s a subject that inevitably came up on ESPN’s show, and according to Stephen A. Smith’s analysis, Flagg would have far too many marketing qualities to echo. Smith’s analysis, Flagg would have far too many marketing qualities to be traded before even donning a Mavericks jersey.

When you have someone with that kind of potential and he’s white, if you’re in the States, you’ve got to keep that guy. Let me be clear: I’m black, but if I were the owner of the Mavericks, I wouldn’t think of selecting anyone other than Cooper Flagg. I wouldn’t think of trading the first pick for a star. I saw him in a commercial, he had the American flag behind him.

Just think of the marketing aspect with him. I’m not saying keep him on the team just because he’s white, the guy can play at a high level. He’s a special talent. Plus, the Mavericks just let Luka Doncic go, so they can’t let Cooper Flagg go a few months later. We’re talking about Texas.

For Stephen A. Smith, a white American superstar in Texas would be far too profitable for the Mavericks to seriously consider trading Cooper Flagg. Although he’ll need time to reach the top and possibly win a title, he could fill the void left by the departure of Luka Doncic. It’s a deal worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
