The Spurs have a decision to make with their second draft pick. Use this pick to recruit Giannis Antetokounmpo, or at least try, or take a young talent. We’d already know the organization’s position.
While there’s a lot of talk about the Mavericks and their huge chance with the first pick of the draft, the Spurs aren’t outdone either by finishing second. This is the third time in a row that San Antonio has finished in the top 4, with Victor Wembanyama in 2023, Stephon Castle in 2024 and now potentially Dylan Harper in 2025.
Cooper Flagg should be selected by Dallas in the first position, but like the Spurs, there’s a choice to be made. There’s the possibility of using this pick to acquire a new young talent, or ceding it in order to pick up a bigger star, like Giannis Antetokounmpo. The latter opens the door to a departure from the Bucks, and the Spurs are on his preferred list.
Decision made for Spurs?
Recruiting Giannis would be a major step for the Texans, who could team him up with Victor Wembanyama and probably compete in the playoffs as early as 2026 with the ambition of making something of it. But should we really be in such a hurry and waste assets if the results aren’t there? Many think not, and the Spurs have already made up their minds.
Speaking to ESPN on Wednesday, draft expert Jonathan Givony gave an update on the latest rumors, saying that San Antonio does indeed plan to pick Harper and keep him. The franchise is convinced that his arrival will be beneficial to the squad, while a trade is to be ruled out as things stand.
Jonathan Givony : “Dylan Harper is going to be the second pick in the draft and I’m 99.9% sure of it. He looked very strong, with a very good shot. He’s also lost a lot of weight while growing up. The San Antonio Spurs are signaling to other teams that they’re eager to pick Harper and aren’t pursuing a trade from what we hear. They believe Harper can play with De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle. Dylan Harper is the second-best prospect in this draft and I think he’ll be a good second choice.”
The main takeaway is that the Spurs will choose Harper and that a trade is not an option. It may be something else if Giannis asks to join them, but the organization would have made its choice immediately. A good decision? Only time will tell.
