Joel Embiid, who underwent surgery a few weeks ago and will be back over the summer if all goes well, wants to return in September and have a big season with the Sixers. But the franchise is now also preparing for the worst.
At the bottom of the Eastern Conference despite title ambitions, the Sixers are perhaps the biggest disappointment of this campaign. Paul George has contributed nothing and Joel Embiid has had another miserable season. The only good news? Philly managed to grab a third pick in the draft, allowing them to take a young talent… or use him to improve the roster.
It’s not yet clear what the front office will do, especially as the organization can already count on Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain for the future. This would be an opportunity to prepare a Plan B, for example, if championship ambitions go nowhere. And it’s fair to say that with the Embiid case, fans have their doubts.
Joel Embiid’s career in danger?
After all, the pivot has undergone yet another knee operation and for some fans, there’s no doubt that this is the player’s last chance in Pennsylvania. If the next campaign comes to nothing, it’ll either be a trade or he’ll go free. One last chance for the Sixers, and many doubts about Joel’s health and level.
We obviously hope that his operation will enable him to return to his best level, but we can also naturally fear a relapse in his knee or new injuries. Even Daryl Morey is preparing for all scenarios, with a sentence about his player that didn’t go unnoticed. Embiid’s return to form is not guaranteed.
Daryl Morey on Joel Embiid : “If Joel comes back—it’s going to be at a very high level. I actually don’t see a scenario where he’s fading. I understand that wasn’t his best year. My point is different though. My point is—I see him playing at a high level, and that’s so important to him that he will either get himself there or not. That’s my feeling. I think he views himself—correctly—as an MVP-level guy.”
“If” Joel comes back. After all, doubts are possible if the operation failed to have the desired effect. Nevertheless, it’s something quite straightforward according to the doctors, who weren’t worried about it. All indications are that Embiid will be with the Sixers in September for training camp. But will he be able to stay healthy? That’s another story.
