The Spurs have often been linked with Giannis Antetokounmpo in recent weeks, even if the whole thing is unlikely after all. Yet for this East-based executive, the Texan franchise would be wrong not to take a chance.
With the second pick of the 2025 draft, the Spurs were again very lucky in the lottery. In fact, before the final ball was drawn, the franchise had the best chance of getting the first pick, but in the end it was the Mavericks who drew the evening’s jackpot. However, the Texans can count themselves very lucky.
Over the last three years, San Antonio has continued to break into the top 4, regardless of their position. The best way to rebuild in the NBA with now Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle and potentially Dylan Harper in a few weeks’ time. But there are doubts about this, as the Spurs have a choice to make.
Should the Spurs go for Giannis?
While Harper is almost guaranteed a runner-up spot, as he’s considered a better player than the other prospects, the Spurs aren’t yet sure they’ll keep their pick if the Giannis Antetokounmpo opportunity becomes serious. But should they rush for the Bucks player? Not everyone agrees on the subject today.
Giannis is in his prime, but he’ll also be 31 at the end of the year, meaning he wants to win a title now. Many think the Spurs aren’t ready with a roster that’s still fairly inexperienced. Not so this Eastern executive, who spoke anonymously to The Athletic this week.
Dirigeant anonyme à l’Est : “If the Spurs paired Giannis and Wemby, they’d be the favorite to win the title next year. They’d have two guys who might be top-five players in the league on the same team. Plus, they fit. They’d have a dominant defense no one could score against inside, and they’d be able to play five-out in a more devastating way than the Bucks ever did.”
The duo would certainly be interesting to watch, but would the Spurs really be the favorites? Unlikely. Firstly, because Giannis will have to give up some important assets, not to mention the inexperience of many players in the postseason. It’s also understandable why many fans want to take their time.
