Russell Westbrook arrived at the Nuggets last summer with the aim of playing for the title and winning his first ring. While we wait to find out whether he’ll continue his career with the Nuggets, aAccording to Bassett, Westbrook could fill the gap left by the eventual retirement of Mike Conley, who will soon be turning 38. His profile could do the Wolves a world of good: journalist has come up with three possible destinations for him.
One season and gone? The hypothesis has to be considered. Russell Westbrook does, after all, have a player option for next season and is therefore free to continue his path in Denver. However, the subject was not yet on his mind following the franchise’s recent elimination from the playoffs. Vinny Benedetto of the Denver Gazette was quick to point this out, reporting on X:
Vinny Benedetto: In the Nuggets locker room, I tried to find out more about Russell Westbrook’s future and whether he’d already made a decision about his player option for next year. He looked at his watch and asked me what clothes I was going to wear the next day. When I told him I didn’t know, he said, “Exactly” and left.
As you can see, there’s no way the Brodie is going to make a decision on this one just yet. But that hasn’t stopped the American bookmakers from taking a closer look. The latter have made the Nets the favorites to snatch him up in the event of the Nuggets’ departure this summer. Bailey Bassett, for his part, recently considered three other credible destinations and explained his reasoning in the columns of ClutchPoints.
The Minnesota Timberwolves
According to Bassett, Westbrook could fill the gap left by the eventual retirement of Mike Conley, who will soon be turning 38. His profile could do the Wolves a world of good:
This team is already very energetic and rough. Westbrook would contribute to this, as he always gives his all on the court. What’s more, he defended very well this season with Denver and would reinforce the Timberwolves’ qualities in this sector.
The Miami Heat
Following Jimmy Butler’s departure during the season, the Heat need a player capable of doing the “dirty work” according to Bassett. And Russ would be capable of fulfilling this role in his eyes:
No one questions Westbrook’s hustle, work ethic or competitive spirit. All these factors make him a logical candidate to join the Miami Heat as a free agent.
The Golden State Warriors
Satisfied with the contribution of Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler, Stephen Curry is nevertheless waiting for reinforcements in Golden State. If Bassett is to be believed, Westbrook could be of some help:
Ideally, Westbrook should join a team that doesn’t need spacing. The Warriors fit this description perfectly, and could use him in a Draymond-like role, able to initiate offense and set screens for Curry.
