Winner in three of the last four years, Nikola Jokic lost out this time to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the race for the MVP trophy. What’s more, he was knocked out of the playoffs by the Canadian, but still received a message from Novak Djokovic.
In the space of a few days, his season could have become even more legendary than it already was. Nikola Jokic had the opportunity to write two of the most beautiful pages in his history recently, with his sights set on both a place in the Western Conference Finals and a fourth MVP title. However, these feats slipped through his fingers in quick succession.
First, the Nuggets’ star pivot was defeated by the Thunder in a thrilling seven-game series. Then, more recently, one of his tormentors, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, took the trophy for best player of the regular season. Even his most prestigious admirers are proud of him, however.
Novak Djokovic comforts Nikola Jokic
After so many years at the highest level, Jokic boasts a sizeable fanbase, including a certain Novak Djokovic. The Serbian tennis player has never concealed his admiration for Jokic, and makes sure to show it whenever he gets the chance. He did so again in recent hours, in a video message relayed by the Nuggets on the X platform:
Novak Djokovic: Nikola, congratulations on yet another historic season. Whether in our beloved country, in Serbia, or in Denver, we’re all super proud of you after yet another record-breaking season. You’ve set so many records and made history once again. All this while proving wrong all those who didn’t think you were capable of doing more than in the last three or four years.
I remain one of your biggest supporters and will continue to watch you write a little more of your name in the history books. So congratulations and keep it going.
Real recognize real, even in difficult times. Djokovic showed this in his kind words to his illustrious compatriot.
It remains to be seen whether the latter will reciprocate by sending him a message on social networks, or even better. The Joker could appear in the next few hours… in Switzerland, where Djoko faces Hubert Hurkacz this Saturday in the final of the Geneva Open. Unless, of course, he prefers to return to Serbia to check on his beloved horses.
