With all these trade and draft rumors, you’d almost forget that the Spurs have other matters to deal with. There’s the possible return of Chris Paul, for example, but nothing is certain at this stage for the veteran.
It’s a hectic summer ahead for the Spurs, who have decisions to make regarding their roster. The front office can organize a major trade to give their roster a boost, or it can stall and take its time, for example by prioritizing the upcoming draft. In fact, a very clear trend is emerging according to insiders to date.
Rather than going for Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is not certain to leave the Bucks this summer, the Spurs would like to take Dylan Harper with the second pick. He’s a talented point guard with the potential to become a real star, according to observers. But his fit in Texas isn’t the most obvious in the world.
Bad news for Spurs?
With the Texans already having De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, it’s not clear that another point guard in need of the ball is the best draft pick. But it’s the biggest potential at this position and the Spurs don’t want to miss out on an opportunity. However, this possible decision could have an impact on Chris Paul’s future.
The veteran has signed for a short year with the Spurs, which means he’ll be a free agent in a few weeks. He’ll be able to sign wherever he wants, and he’s made it clear in the past that he wants to have a real role on a team, not just veteran status in the locker room. That’s what Jonah Kubicek rightly reminds us.
Jonah Kubicek : “When he arrived in San Antonio, he made it clear that he relished the chance to “hoop” and did not want to have a Udonis Haslem-style role. He wants to play and be a real contributor on the court, not just in the locker room.”
Understand that Paul wants minutes and to contribute to wins, and not necessarily to be content with the bench. Has his opinion changed a year later? It’s hard to believe. Paul could leave for a bigger role, or perhaps the presence of Victor Wembanyama will change things. But a departure for the point guard, especially with the arrival of Fox and the Harper draft, is a real possibility.
