In a few weeks’ time, when a franchise has finally landed the Larry O’Brien trophy, all eyes will turn to Cooper Flagg and the draft. But what is he really worth? According to one expert, he’s not at the level of Victor Wembanyama.
There are only four franchises left with a shot at the NBA title. So, while the Knicks, Pacers, Timberwolves and Thunder battle it out nightly, the other teams have to think of ways to compete with the big boys. For many, that means making smart selections in the upcoming draft.
At this level, the Spurs and Mavericks will have the best chances, since, despite having talented squads ready to fight for the playoffs, they will have the opportunity to take the two best prospects. In San Antonio, this should translate into the selection of Dylan Harper. In Dallas, it’s the phenomenon Cooper Flagg who should be packing his bags for the years to come.
Cooper Flagg as strong as a young Anthony Davis?
So the question is, what’s he really worth? In a recent draft prediction, The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie made a pretty clear comparison about the Duke-born prodigy. He wouldn’t have the talent of a Victor Wembanyama, but he’d still be in line with another great NBA superstar.
Cooper Flagg isn’t quite in Victor Wembanyama’s league when you compare the best prospects over the last 20 years, but he’s close to an Anthony Davis. Barring injury, he’s a safe bet thanks to his immense talent, athleticism, shot-making ability and mentality. He’ll arrive with a good work ethic, because he wants to be a legend.
Cooper Flagg isn’t as strong and expected as Victor Wembanyama, he’d be more comparable to an Anthony Davis. That’s not an insult, but a huge compliment when you consider how dominant AD was at university. It’s no coincidence that he took part in the 2012 London Olympics without any professional experience whatsoever! Will Flagg accept the comparisons?
