In the space of two years, Victor Wembanyama has established himself as one of the league’s best players. This didn’t stop him from being left out of The Ringer‘s Top 10 rankings… news that made San Antonio fans go crazy.
It’s hard to have a more spectacular debut than Victor Wembanyama’s. He faced immense pressure upon his arrival in the league: not only had the Spurs used their first pick in the draft to select him, but he was also heralded as a generational prodigy who would revolutionize the game.
Others would have buckled under such expectations, but the Frenchman has more than lived up to them in his first two seasons. A 2024 Rookie of the Year and two-time league blocker, he was even poised to be voted DPOY this year before he was sent to the infirmary before the All-Star Game. Averaging over 24 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks, the Alien is already an absolute superstar in Texas.

According to his peers, the Olympic runner-up is already the league’s most terrifying defender, and the craziest thing about it all is that he dominates on both ends of the court even though he’s still only 21 years old. His room for improvement is therefore enormous, and for some, he’s already one of the very best players in the world. But The Ringer website clearly wanted to calm the ardor with its Top 100:

On the one hand, The Ringer‘s caution is understandable: Wemby suffered a deep vein thrombosis in February, and while recent reports are encouraging, it’s unclear where he stands today. On the other hand, this ranking was considered the worst kind of disgrace by San Antonio fans:
