After a totally unsuccessful season, the Suns will be making some important decisions in the coming weeks. Kevin Durant is on his way out, but so is Bradley Beal. His case remains complex.
Given the organization’s ambitions and its wage bill, it’s only natural that the Suns’ horrible season should not go without consequences. The coach has already left, as has the GM, but these are only the first changes. The new front office is now in charge of cleaning things up, and not just a little, according to early feedback.
Kevin Durant is expected to leave the franchise, according to Shams Charania, who confirms that negotiations began in June, with a binding agreement before the draft on June 25. Departures are to be expected from this team, even in the case of Bradley Beal. But for him, it’s a different story straight away.
The Suns’ divisive case
Getting rid of Beal is perhaps Phoenix’s number 1 priority. His $60 million-a-year contract is a problem, and the player has regressed greatly in this campaign. His performances were so bad that Phoenix wouldn’t want him back on the roster. So there could be a clash if a departure cannot be found.
The problem is that the former Wizards man has the ability to refuse trades with his veto power, which he already did last February according to a few insiders. So the Suns want him gone, but it’s not that simple. And given his last campaign, in addition to his contract, he’s considered more of a liability than an asset.
According to John Gambadoro, Phoenix could put pressure on him by refusing to bring him back into the roster no matter what. Is this enough to push him towards the exit?
@TheDunkCentral : “According to John Gambadoro, the Phoenix Suns don’t want Bradley Beal back.”
A decision that speaks volumes about the player and his contribution to this campaign. The trade is preferable for everyone, but his contract is certainly an issue. It’s possible he’ll be stuck in Arizona, and finding a deal for a buyout will be just as complex. In short, a long nightmare for fans after questionable front office choices. Because if Beal is here with this poisonous contract, it’s primarily their fault.
