Visiting China for the past few days, Victor Wembanyama embarked on a spiritual retreat with local monks. The fact that he has shaved his head for the occasion is causing quite a stir in the NBA, especially with the always unpredictable Paul Pierce.

While many players take advantage of the off-season to escape to paradisiacal destinations, Victor Wembanyama has set himself an entirely different agenda. During his stay in China, Victor Wembanyama first enjoyed the local culture… before undertaking a rather unexpected project. For several days now, he has been living in seclusion in a temple, alongside simple monks.

Astonishing enough as it is, this news was accompanied by a few photos that got people talking even more. In order to respect the codes of his new home, the French interior agreed to shave his head. It didn’t take much to surprise a large part of the NBA community, including a shocked Draymond Green when he discovered the famous images.

In addition to Draymond, a plethora of league personalities have also commented on Wembanyama’s retreat to China in recent hours. Some of them, like the bloodthirsty Vernon Maxwell, hailed the initiative. Others, like Paul Pierce, sought to draw conclusions. The latter offered his analysis in KG Certified… partly based on Victor’s skin color:

Paul Pierce: Oh, he’s dead serious. He goes all the way in there. He’s really said to himself, “Okay, no more pretty boy, I’m going for real.” (…) To me, that shows he’s really not kidding around anymore. He’s dropped the curls and all that lightskin stuff. Going from the pretty haircut to the shaved head is serious business. It means, “I don’t care what you think, I can take you down!

Proof of his unwavering commitment, this new hair look is all the more remarkable when Wemby’s skin tone is taken into account. According to Pierce, few light-skinned black players like him would have dared such a metamorphosis:

Paul Pierce: Lightskins like him don’t like to cut their hair like that. At least, the ones I know, they don’t like anyone touching their pretty hair. They don’t even like to have their hands on it! That’s why Matt Barnes was always fighting on the field! Lightskins don’t like their hair touched, let alone shaved. So you really have to take it seriously.

A wild take like only The Truth is capable of.
