As holders of the 2nd pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, the Spurs remain in a position to trade it in order to obtain what they consider to be a more attractive counterpart. In this context, an Eastern franchise has reportedly approached them with the aim of acquiring him.
After years of putting youth first, perhaps the time has come for them to change course. In any case, the Spurs feel they have enough potential in their squad to enter the second phase of their project. And it’s a safe bet that Victor Wembanyama wouldn’t mind, as he’s keen to win his first NBA title as soon as possible.
However, it has to be said that his managers are still spoilt for choice. Indeed, the Draft Lottery has once again spoiled them, as it allowed them to inherit the #2 pick. The 2025 crop of future rookies, embodied by Cooper Flagg, promises to be quite promising. San Antonio’s front office may therefore be tempted to acquire yet another young talent.
The Spurs’ No. 2 pick coveted in the league
Supposedly attracted by Dylan Harper’s profile, the Spurs are still likely to let him go. Their 2nd pick could, after all, be used as a bargaining chip in a trade involving the arrival of an established star, such as Kevin Durant or Giannis Antetokounmpo. Unless he’s sacrificed in a trade with… the 76ers, who would like to acquire him according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype :
Michael Scotto: According to sources, the 76ers have begun discussions with the Spurs with a view to potentially moving up in the Draft and obtaining the #2 pick. For now, the Sixers have narrowed their list of targets to four prospects should they retain the #3 pick. Note that VJ Edgecombe did a private workout in Philadelphia last week and Ace Bailey will go there next week.
Also well positioned in the draft, the Sixers would nevertheless like to gain a place and select second. This would undoubtedly be a way for them to get their hands on Harper, whom they must also like. It remains to be seen, however, what package they’d be willing to sacrifice to convince the Spurs to give him up by June 25.
Would Daryl Morey offer his Texan counterparts the 3rd pick as a consolation prize? Or is he looking to make two selections in quick succession, thereby attracting two top prospects into his net? For the time being, the above indiscretions do not allow us to determine this. No doubt further details of these negotiations will be revealed before the big night.
