As the offseason approaches, some franchises are bracing for a potentially chaotic summer — and the Atlanta Hawks are right at the center of it. The biggest question they face? The uncertain future of star point guard Trae Young.
Young is eligible for a massive four-year, $229 million contract extension this summer — a figure that reflects his star status. But according to multiple sources, there are serious doubts within the Hawks organization about committing to such a deal. It’s not a total surprise, considering the team’s underwhelming season that ended with two straight losses in the play-in tournament.
This hesitation has sparked speculation about a scenario that seemed unthinkable just a few years ago: Trae Young potentially leaving Atlanta. Several teams around the league are closely monitoring the situation. If the Hawks hesitate or refuse to offer the max, interest in the 25-year-old guard could quickly snowball into a full-blown bidding war. That said, the Spurs are unlikely to be among the suitors after acquiring De’Aaron Fox back in February.
Big Changes Coming in Atlanta?
This could signal a strategic shift for the franchise, especially with Zaccharie Risacher now in the fold. Viewed as a potential cornerstone for the future, the French forward might be the centerpiece of a new era in Atlanta. The Hawks could very well choose to move on from Young and rebuild around their young core. One complication: their next two first-round picks belong to the Spurs.
Here’s what Evan Sidery shared on Twitter:
@esidery : « Teams are closely monitoring the Hawks as it relates to Trae Young’s future. Young, who is eligible for a four-year, $229 million extension, wants to get paid but there’s belief Atlanta might not want to offer him the full-scale amount. Keep an extremely close eye on Atlanta. »
Transitions like this are never easy — especially when it means potentially parting ways with a player who led the team to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021. But with the team’s recent stagnation and a rising star in Risacher waiting in the wings, a full reset may be on the horizon.
One thing’s for sure: if the Hawks decide not to give Trae Young the max, there will be no shortage of suitors. Several teams would love to make a move for him to jumpstart their own rebuilds — and Atlanta could walk away with some valuable assets in return. It might not be such a bad idea after all.
