A suspense hangs over the Lakers’ search for the ideal center this summer. Walker Kessler, the young promising Jazz player, is drawing particular attention from the California franchise. However, negotiations are expected to be tough…
The Lakers are looking for a new center this summer, with recent confirmed interest in Walker Kessler, often compared to Rudy Gobert early in his career. A good rim protector, but a big problem stands in the way: he plays for the Jazz. Danny Ainge, Utah’s general manager, is known for being tough when it comes to parting with key players. This situation pushes the Lakers to consider other options on the market.
Renowned NBA analyst Jovan Buha points out that Kessler could be available—but at a very high price. He doubts the Lakers have the assets needed to close a deal with the Jazz. Kessler’s potential is undeniable, but he represents a significant investment. Los Angeles must carefully weigh its choices to strengthen its roster without giving up too much in return.
Doubts for the Lakers?
Jovan Buha : “I just don’t know if the Lakers have the requisite assets to get Walker Kessler, but I think he’s likely available for the right price,” Buha said. “I just think that price is very high, and I don’t know if the Lakers can get to it.”
And with Ainge on the other side, it’s unlikely the Lakers will find an easy agreement. It won’t be as simple as with his friend Nico Harrison for Luka Doncic.
Nic Claxton from the Nets and Daniel Gafford from the Mavericks appear as more accessible alternatives. Although they don’t have the same potential as Kessler, they could meet an immediate need without demanding an exorbitant price. The Lakers will therefore have to choose between aiming for a more promising but costly player or securing their roster with more reasonable options.
Danny Ainge will undoubtedly be a key figure in these negotiations. His demand for solid returns complicates the Lakers’ task, who must juggle an already high salary cap. A trade will likely require sacrificing young talents or draft picks. The California franchise will therefore need patience and strategy.
The idea of a rotation with multiple centers is also mentioned to ensure some flexibility. Even with Kessler, it might be necessary to add a complement like Claxton or Gafford. This approach would provide more depth and versatility, two essential qualities in the playoffs.
