The market is heating up behind the scenes, and things are shifting faster than expected. In this high-voltage atmosphere, one name keeps coming up: Kevin Durant. And to everyone’s surprise, the Timberwolves are very much in the race.
Could Kevin Durant actually end up joining Anthony Edwards in the cold of Minnesota? The idea sounded far-fetched just weeks ago, but it’s gaining traction by the day. The Timberwolves are reportedly in discussions with the Suns regarding a potential trade, aiming to form a star duo capable of contending for the NBA Finals. Despite the hurdles, the franchise is shooting its shot.
According to Jon Krawczynski, talks between the two teams have indeed begun. Minnesota is interested, but they want to stay in control. A hard line has already been drawn: Jaden McDaniels is off the table. The forward is considered untouchable by the front office, which complicates the feasibility of a deal.

The Athletic : “The Timberwolves and Suns have been discussing a Kevin Durant trade, sources tell @JonKrawczynski. Minnesota is making Jaden McDaniels untouchable in those trade discussions, team sources say. A deal is not close at the moment.”
Rudy Gobert’s name is surfacing as a potential trade piece. The French big man has a contract that could make the deal work financially. Additionally, Phoenix is actively looking for a long-term replacement for Deandre Ayton. Brian Gregory, the Suns’ new GM, reportedly likes Gobert’s profile.
Despite mutual interest, Minnesota doesn’t exactly hold the strongest hand. Compared to teams like the Heat or Rockets, the Wolves lack highly promising young assets and premium draft picks. This limited flexibility could put them at a disadvantage in the race.
It’s also worth noting that Kevin Durant doesn’t have a no-trade clause. While he’s made it known he prefers certain destinations, some teams are reportedly willing to acquire him without any extension guarantee. That reality weakens his leverage and could push Phoenix to simply accept the best overall offer—regardless of KD’s preferences.
