Anthony Davis has only been in Dallas for a few months now, following his trade against Luka Doncic. However, if his franchise were to choose to part ways with him this summer, Shams Charania already knows what the trade-off could be.

We’ve seen worse as a framework for starting over. After six and a half years of building their future around Luka Doncic, the Mavericks made a 180-degree turn last February. Out went the Slovenian, in came Anthony Davis, who became the team’s new star alongside Kyrie Irving. A truly powerful duo.

On top of that, the Texans picked up the first overall pick in the draft lottery, which guarantees them the arrival of Cooper Flagg in a few days. Even though Kyrie will be out for many months due to his knee injury, the frontcourt formed by the rookie and the former Lakers big man looks very promising.

Nice counterpart incoming in the event of an Anthony Davis trade?

Well, all of this, of course, is on the condition that The Brow doesn’t pack his bags in the coming weeks. The Dallas front office has proven it this season, it’s capable of anything, and even if the 2020 NBA champion seems to be a fundamental piece of the franchise’s future, this was also the case for Doncic… And then, it’s not out of the question that the former first draft pick wants to leave if things don’t go well in 2025-26.

In which case, we would be facing another departure from the superstar, which is no small feat, given that the trade market has seen some upheaval recently. Desmond Bane’s departure to Orlando for five first-round picks calls a lot of things into question, as Shams Charania revealed on Pat McAfee’s podcast. The renowned insider took the opportunity to address Davis’s case:

Last year, we saw Mikal Bridges go for five first-round picks and the Nets got Bojan Bogdanovic. Bojan Bogdanovic was not a player for the Nets this season, he was a non-factor (The Croatian was absent due to injury for the entire year). In this case, you give up Desmond Bane for for first-round picks and a swap, ainsi two that you feel they can help you now a little bit (Cole Anthony et Kentavious Caldwell-Pope).

If you think about the Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade, if you put Anthony Davis on the open market right now he’s fetching you four or five first-round picks right now. I think it’s about (whether) you want to trade for the player or the picks.

If GM Nico Harrison ever wants to completely overhaul the Mavs’ future, he knows what he has to do… even if it will make him even less popular with fans.
