Everyone has been waiting for weeks to find out where Kevin Durant will play next season. But according to insider Brian Windhorst, the outcome of this saga could surprise more than a few… and not in a good way.

The divorce between Kevin Durant and the Suns seems clearly underway. The franchise had already tried to get rid of him before the last trade deadline, and things haven’t improved since, as the franchise missed the playoffs. Since the Slim Reaper didn’t appreciate the attempts to trade him behind his back, his departure seemed inevitable.

However, we can’t say that the case is moving forward since, at the moment, there aren’t many teams interested in acquiring the two-time NBA champion. As a result, we could well see a big surprise according to Brian Windhorst, the famous ESPN insider who recently warned everyone about the former Warriors player:

What if Kevin Durant… stayed with the Suns?!

You’re not going to get that great of a package because the team paying for it isn’t sure what Durant’s going to do necessarily. And the teams that Durant wants to go to, Houston and San Antonio for example, they’re leery of paying a huge amount for a 37-year-old. Their whole teams are in their early- to mid-20s. So you don’t have alignment in everybody getting on the same page.

What Durant wants, what the Suns need, what the teams want to pay with the contract. I would not rule out the Suns not being able to get a trade they like and having to make a decision like “do we not trade him at all?”

That would be quite a turnaround after such a saga…

However, there is a good chance that this will happen since, beyond the reservations expressed by other franchises, Phoenix may have bitten off more than it can chew regarding the compensation for KD. Not only because the player is aging and has had a second collective failure after the Nets, but also because the drama between him and his management since February is not playing in their favor:

Duane Rankin : The Suns have “no leverage” in part because of Durant’s age and because he wants to start fresh elsewhere, league sources say. The idea of Kevin Durant returning to a team that entertained deals for him before the 2025 trade deadline isn’t a pleasant one.
