The saga seems to be nearing its end—at least for this summer. While his name had been repeatedly mentioned in trade rumors, particularly involving the Spurs, Giannis Antetokounmpo is set to remain with the Bucks. And the franchise has no intention of stopping there.
Since Milwaukee’s first-round playoff exit, doubts had been mounting. The team’s collective failure, coupled with Damian Lillard’s Achilles injury, reignited speculation about Giannis potentially leaving. Some insiders even pointed to San Antonio as a serious destination to join forces with Victor Wembanyama.
No departure in sight, though, as Milwaukee reportedly plans to stay aggressive, according to Bobby Marks.
““It would be easy for the Bucks to put Antetokounmpo on the trade market, especially in light of Lillard’s Achilles injury and consecutive losses in the first round. However, sources confirmed to ESPN that Milwaukee will be aggressively exploring options in free agency and trades to complement Antetokounmpo.””
Bucks ready to strike on the market?
The message is clear: Giannis wants to stay, and the front office is on the same page. The franchise hopes to build a competitive roster quickly, but its resources are limited. Milwaukee has few valuable assets to offer, several heavy contracts on the books, and very little financial flexibility. And without Lillard, contending in the East won’t be easy.
This firm decision from Giannis is a blow to the Spurs, who had dreamed of landing a superstar to pair with Wembanyama. The Texas franchise will now have to remain patient, continuing to stockpile assets while waiting for another high-profile opportunity. A move in 2026 could still be in play.
As for Milwaukee, they’re playing a risky hand. If next season doesn’t go as planned, tensions could resurface quickly. Keeping Giannis is a temporary relief, but time is running out for the Bucks to deliver another championship, which remains the Greek Freak’s top priority.
Without solid reinforcements this summer, the pressure will quickly return. Antetokounmpo has never been shy about making his expectations known, and another failed season in 2026 could reignite talk of a departure. For Milwaukee, it’s a final turn that must be taken with both caution… and bold ambition.
