Since the arrival of Tony Parker in their ranks, the Spurs have shown increasing confidence in French players. Already delighted and proud to be able to rely on Victor Wembanyama, they could get their hands on one of his young compatriots this summer.
Even if the Wizards seem to want to compete with them in this respect, they are still generally regarded as the NBA franchise with the most French accent. It has to be said that the Spurs have had a number of French players on their roster over the years. Victor Wembanyama is one of them. Another may join soon.
Yet another Frenchman picked up by the Spurs… in the Draft?
Holding the 2nd pick in the upcoming draft, San Antonio should a priori use it to get their hands on the promising Dylan Harper. However, it’s hard to know what will happen to pick 14, which they also hold. And when some of their fans invite them to use it to recruit Maxime Raynaud, it’s ultimately another French hopeful who could be selected thanks to him. RG Media reports:
Joan Beringer, the 6 foot 11 center who plays for Cedevita Olimpija in Slovenia, is of interest to several teams with a view to the Draft. The Atlanta Hawks (#13) and San Antonio Spurs (#14) are among those keeping a close eye on him, according to RG sources. He recently completed the Draft Combine process and was measured at 6-11 barefoot, with a wingspan of 7-4½ and a vertical reach of 9-3.
Beringer is seen as a big man to be polished but with great potential, capable of protecting the circle well and mobile. While his offensive game is still developing, his size and agility intrigue teams keen to build their frontcourt over the long term.
Although he didn’t start playing basketball until 2021, Beringer’s talent is undeniable and he’s highly rated in the NBA. In fact, an anonymous scout praised him to RG:
He hasn’t been playing basketball for very long, but you’d never guess it from how quickly he learns. His professionalism is off the charts, and he’s constantly asking questions to improve. You can tell he takes his work seriously. He’s not just a potential player, he also has a real desire to progress.
However, despite this rather flattering portrait of the French U18 international, Texans fans are struggling to agree on whether or not he deserves to be the subject of a bet:
@samborghiniz: We don’t need more projects
@TexasSports19: Ohhh, fantastic prospect! Super athletic and fast for an inside guy.
@DelmarGonzales: Didn’t we learn anything from the Luka Samanic experience? No more projects
@NFL4SanAntonio: Rebounding and protecting the circle, everything the Spurs need
