When a franchise comes off a season as tough as the one the Wizards just had, sometimes you need to take bold action to change the narrative. That’s exactly what Washington appears to be doing ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft. Armed with the 6th pick, the team had hoped for better lottery luck, and now seems determined to trade up to land an elite young talent.

Grant Afseth : “Holding picks No. 6 and 18 in the first round, the Wizards have explored trade-up scenarios in hopes of securing one of the top backcourt prospects, league sources told RG. Washington has made multiple offers to teams in the top five in an effort to land either Dylan Harper or Jeremiah Fears, even being willing to part with surprising names to move up to No. 2 overall. Thus far, those attempts have been rebuffed.”

Wizards going all-in?

That refusal isn’t too surprising given the value of the No. 2 pick and San Antonio’s strong interest in Harper, who is reportedly high on their draft board. Still, Washington’s aggressiveness signals a shift in the franchise’s ambition. The rebuild hinges on landing a high-upside point guard, and they’re clearly willing to give up key pieces to get one.

With the draft set for June 25, the next few days will be critical. Either the Wizards manage to strike a deal in time, or they’ll be forced to stay put at No. 6 and hope one of their targets falls—something that seems unlikely given the level of league-wide interest. The pressure is very real behind the scenes.

What remains unclear is what Washington is actually willing to give up. The name Bilal Coulibaly has surfaced, but such a move would represent a major shift in their rebuild strategy. Unless something drastic happens, the Spurs seem content to stay the course and stick to their long-term plan.

One thing’s for sure: this is shaping up to be one of the busiest pre-draft periods in recent memory for Washington. If a deal does go through with San Antonio or another top-5 team, it could mark a real turning point. But if not, the front office will need to make the most of what they have—before the fan base’s growing impatience becomes too loud to ignore.
