Former team-mates at the Thunder, Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant were both set to move on this summer. It’s now a done deal for the latter, who was invited to speak about a possible reunion with Brodie at the Rockets.
In a normal NBA day, the Thunder’s coronation would logically have dominated the headlines. But that was without counting on the outcome of the Kevin Durant drama. After weeks of negotiations between the Suns and various teams, the winger-star was sent to Houston on Sunday, making headlines and almost stealing the show from his former franchise.
A reunion with Westbrook in Houston? KD’s straight answer
While he was quick to congratulate Oklahoma City on their title on social networks, Durant has mainly been answering questions about his trade in recent hours. Present at the Fanatics Fest, he stopped by the Kay Adams microphone to talk about the big news concerning him. It was also an opportunity for him to explain his desire to join the Rockets, about whom he was dithyrambic:
Kevin Durant: They’re coming off a big season, there’s already a lot of leadership on the team… I thought I’d be a nice addition there.
It’s true that the arrival of KD seems to further strengthen the title chances of the Texans, who already appeared to be solid outsiders this year. However, the Slim Reaper is not about to get too carried away just yet:
Kevin Durant: We’ll see how dangerous the Rockets are now that I’m here! They won more than 50 games last season, they really put together a great campaign… But all of that takes time and work, effort and execution, so we’ll see how it plays out.
Patience is indeed still required, as the off-season remains long.
The Rockets could, after all, get their hands on other reinforcements in the coming weeks and offer their new flagship recruit a little more help in his quest for the Larry O’Brien trophy. And why not… Russell Westbrook, who came through Houston a few years ago? The question was put by Kay Adams to Durant… who quickly calmed his ardor:
Kevin Durant: I don’t know anything about that! We’ve already made a big step forward today with my transfer, so we’ll have time to think about the rest later! It’s still early to talk about that.
In any case, it’s clear that Westbrook appears to be accessible on the market, having recently seen a door close in front of him.
