One of LeBron James’ greatest career achievements was playing on the same team as his eldest son. In fact, he is very involved in his son’s career, and has not hesitated to set an example for him to follow in the league.
LeBron James has won everything in his career, he’s the leading scorer in NBA history, and yet his greatest achievement in the league may have nothing to do with his performances. Indeed, what is most dear to the King’s heart is most certainly the fact that he has been able to share the court with his oldest son, Bronny.
At the heart of many discussions since his teenage years, the eldest of the James family has had the courage and determination to follow in his father’s footsteps. Some see him as an obvious talent, others believe he was only signed by the Lakers because he had a famous name, but either way, he will forever go down in league history.
The example set by LeBron James for his sons
Ultra-performing during his time in the G League and not yet mature enough to contribute in the NBA, Bronny James is going to have to find a very specific role for himself if he is to have a successful career. And just in time, LeBron seems to have the perfect example for him. In the latest episode of his “Mind The Game” podcast, he revealed the role model he wants his children to emulate.
I want to share something. I have a group conversation with Bronny and Bryce. From time to time, I send them something to keep them focused. I came across something from June 18, 2024. I’m going to read you a player’s background, and then I’ll tell you who it is. Unranked in high school. 0 NCAA Division 1 bids. 3 years in division 2. College transfer to Colorado. NBA champion.
This is Derrick White’s career. He’s one hell of a player in the league. My message to my sons was this: the journey to success is different for everyone. Stay focused and patient. That was my message to my boys last year.
Bronny and Bryce may be named after James, but LeBron knows they’re not as talented as he is, and won’t have the same path to the top as he does. But with this little message, he wanted to show them that anything is possible in the league, even for players who come from afar. Derrick White, who exploded rather late in life, is now considered one of the best role players in the world. Why not the James sons?
