At the end of the summer, Luka Doncic will take part in the Euro with Slovenia. It’s a totally different player who could show up in Riga, as he’s been undergoing intensive training since the Lakers’ elimination from the playoffs. He’s reportedly undergoing a metamorphosis.

For a long time, Luka Doncic was seen as the jewel of the 2018 draft crop, as the player of this generation who would walk the league for many years to come. In his first few seasons, he totally lived up to expectations, even carrying the Mavericks all the way to the Finals. But following the Thunder’s title triumph, the hierarchy was turned upside down.

Not necessarily expected at this level, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the 11th pick in 2018, can now claim to be the best player on the planet, having just won his first MVP title and ring in the space of a few weeks. A competitor at heart, the Lakers’ point guard will have his work cut out to overtake him, just as he did at the start of his American career.

The hope for his many fans is that he seems to be taking it all to heart. Since the Lakers’ elimination in the first round of the playoffs, Luka has been working hard to lose weight and regain the physique of his youth. Dan Woike, who follows the franchise on a daily basis for The Athletic, gave an update on the Slovenian.

Luka Doncic is incredibly committed to getting back into shape this summer. He’s already lost quite a bit of weight and is working on a very strict diet, while improving his cardio, according to a source very familiar with the plan. For the first time in his career, he spent a month away from the pitch to focus on his body. He is now slimmer and back on the pitch with Slovenia.

Usually, Luka Doncic spends his summer on the courts improving his few weak points and perfecting what he already does well. But this year, he decided to take a month off to focus on his body rather than his game. The results are already obvious, as he is said to have lost quite a lot of weight. Now he’ll have to maintain this form over time.

What’s worrying for the rest of Europe is that he’ll be arriving at the Euro sharp as ever, and he could make some noise with Slovenia. The 2017 champions won’t necessarily be favorites, but Luka is the kind of player who can make the difference single-handedly if he decides to. The show will only be more impressive if he’s at his best.
