Despite the loss of Luka Doncic last February, the Mavericks still have a competitive enough roster to aim for the title. Even more so with the probable arrival of Cooper Flagg in Dallas… and one of the four players they covet.

When they parted company with Luka Doncic, many fans saw the franchise as having fallen apart. However, four months after this earthquake on the NBA planet, the Mavericks are not necessarily in a precarious situation. Quite the contrary, in fact. After all, they are expected to get their hands on the promising Cooper Flagg in a few hours’ time… and continue to shake up the market in the days to come.

Four intriguing leads explored by the Mavericks

Still boasting stars such as Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson, the Mavs have also managed to reach an agreement with Daniel Gafford to keep him for free agency. This first piece of good news was quickly followed by another. On Tuesday, Shams Charania reported on the forthcoming extension of Kyrie Irving, who could also become a free agent this summer:

Shams Charania: “Sources tell ESPN that Dallas Mavericks non-two-time NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving has decided to decline his $43 million player option and plans to sign a three-year, $119 million contract with the franchise. The deal includes a player option for the 2027-28 season.”

While Kyrie’s future will be written in Dallas, his long-term absence due to a ruptured cruciate ligament in his left knee remains a source of concern. However, the agreement reached in the last few hours between him and his franchise should enable the latter to find a replacement for him, according to Shams :

Shams Charania: “It’s a deal that benefits both parties, since its numbers allow the Mavericks to get the taxpayer mid-level exception. And why is that important? Because they need to find and recruit a point guard capable of playing starter in Kyrie Irving’s absence.”

In other words, the Mavs will have a significant new asset to bring to the free agent market in the next few days. And still according to ESPN’s famous insider, they plan to use it to lure four point guards whose contracts are about to expire:

Shams Charania: “The Mavs are expected to pick up the taxpayer mid-level exception at $5.7 million via this deal. Sources report that potential targets accessible via this salary include Dennis Schröder, D’Angelo Russell, Chris Paul and Malcolm Brogdon.”

Luckily for the Texas franchise, there’s no shortage of attractive options. It remains to be seen whether the simple taxpayer mid-level exception will be enough to attract one of them, or whether the competition will be more generous and force them to look at other profiles.
