As predicted by all the pundits, the Spurs retained the 2nd pick of the draft and used it to select Dylan Harper. The young guard was then quickly able to chat with Victor Wembanyama, who provided a rather comical scene.
The spectre of an XXL trade continued to loom large, although it didn’t seem very credible to insiders. Indeed, the Spurs had the opportunity to part with the #2 pick in the draft and to obtain a large consideration for him, so numerous did the candidates to obtain him seem to be within the league. However, they preferred to keep him and get their hands on Dylan Harper, whose future looks bright.
Dylan Harper and Victor Wembanyama’s funny first discussion
Heralded as a very talented player, Harper’s mission will be to carve out a place for himself in San Antonio’s already crowded backcourt. At the same time, he will strive to develop a certain chemistry with his new teammate and leader, Victor Wembanyama. In the meantime, the two men made introductions by telephone on the sidelines of Wednesday’s ceremony… and were very, if not a little too formal:

Dylan Harper: « Yo, what’s good? »
Victor Wembanyama: « Hey ! I play for the Spurs, my name is Vic. »
Dylan Harper: « Yes sir, I know who you is! My name is Dylan, I just got drafted by the Spurs… I think I’m your new teammate now! »
Victor Wembanyama: « We lit! »
Dylan Harper: « We lit, for sure! It’s gonna be fun, my dog. »
Paradoxically enough, it was Wembanyama who came across as the most intimidated in this funny sequence. In any case, the way he expressed himself could have given the impression that he had just arrived in the NBA. Much to the amusement of many Spurs fans, who also appreciated the professional discourse delivered by the young French inside player afterwards:
Victor Wembanyama: « We gonna work. For now, enjoy, celebrate, get ready for Summer League and after that, we go back to it. »
Dylan Harper: « For sure! I’ll catch you later, thanks for your call, really appreciate it man. »
Victor Wembanyama: « Welcome (to the Spurs), enjoy! »
