It’s official: Cooper Flagg is now a Dallas player. Predictions are already running high around the young big man, with some even predicting him to win a championship title before Victor Wembanyama for a specific reason.
It’s been an open secret since lottery night. Everyone knew ahead of the draft who the Mavericks would select with the first pick, given that a certain Cooper Flagg was about to make his NBA debut. The big man is touted as a huge talent and had a great NCAA season at Duke. The opportunity was unmissable.
His arrival in Texas has obviously delighted many observers in the United States, starting with Colin Cowherd. The analyst even declared on his show that the rookie had a head start on other superstars at the same stage of their careers:
Cooper Flagg is the best domestic product. I think he has a more well-rounded game than Anthony Davis or Carmelo Anthony.
Colin Cowherd ecstatic after Cooper Flagg’s arrival in Dallas
It’s true that the Maine Event has been praised for months for the diversity of its game, which can do just about anything on the court. Armed with him and Anthony Davis, the Mavericks would therefore be in an ideal position to go for the title, according to Cowherd. Flagg’s chances of achieving it would even be higher than those of Victor Wembanyama:
The last decade, we’ve had two stars be the number one pick. Wemby and Zion were stars. Small markets and bad rosters. Cooper Flagg is going to Dallas. Dallas has the deepest frontline in the NBA. He doesn’t have to defend the rim; he can get out on transition. I think he’s a perfect fit. This is very rare.
Just like (with) Duke, he’s gonna walk in and he’s not gonna waste four years – waiting for coaching staff, the draft picks to develop, and that’s what Wemby having to do.
A statement that will obviously not please Spurs fans, as the franchise has just acquired Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant in the draft.
On the one hand, Flagg will indeed have the opportunity to play with future Hall of Famers like AD or even Klay Thompson and Kyrie Irving, when the latter returns from injury. On the other hand, however, things still need to work out, while San Antonio is patiently building around Wembanyama, waiting for him to reach his prime. Time will tell which project was the wisest.
