Destined to join the Mavericks, Cooper Flagg was indeed selected with the 1st pick and will now have to assume this status in the NBA. But before making his league debut, he took the liberty of rejecting a label that’s stuck to his skin.
He was undoubtedly the star attraction of the 2025 season. In fact, Cooper Flagg has been the talk of the U.S. for months now, with NBA scouts salivating over his potential. His performances on the high school circuit, under the colors of the prestigious Montverde Academy, have already generated millions of views on social networks and earned him a fine reputation.
The young American talent went on to confirm the hopes placed in him at the NCAA. His exploits with Duke cemented his status as a future first-round draft pick. So much so that the traditional NBA tanking process was cleverly renamed “Capture the Flagg” for the occasion. And that’s not the only name that has met with success in the United States.
Cooper Flagg not a fan of his viral nickname
A native of Maine, Flagg is very proud of his roots and of being one of the few representatives of this state on the basketball planet. That’s why he’s been given the thoughtful nickname “Maine Event” in the US. But when Taylor Rooks asked him about it on NBATV this Wednesday, the new Mavericks player wasn’t too enthusiastic:
Taylor Rooks: « Can we talk about that awesome nickname, the ‘Maine Event’? How do we keep it alive in the league? »
Cooper Flagg: « Erm… I don’t really know. To tell you the truth, I find it a bit weird that someone would actually call me that. But it’s still cool to use on social networks and stuff. »
While he’s happy to see the nickname used by Internet users, Flagg tends to cringe when he hears it in real life. It remains to be seen whether this clarification will make him disappear or not. In any case, many fans on X have expressed their surprise at this point of view, and are campaigning for this original find to continue to be used on the platform:
@NFCNorthMuse: « This nickname is great what is he talking about »
@southerncheez: « Too bad, i think it’s cool. »
@BViews23: « Nah, the Maine Event is fire »
@Mr_NNM1: « Bro Maine Event is sick!! wtf »
@skye_higdon: « The lost art of nicknames needs to be studied »
