Although the Spurs listened to offers from other franchises for the second pick of the draft, they finally made the choice to select Dylan Harper. A high-quality point guard, he will have a special relationship with Victor Wembanyama. He has obviously given his opinion on this association.
Had they known they’d inherit the second pick in this 2025 Draft, the Spurs probably wouldn’t have brought in De’Aaron Fox at the deadline, even if they didn’t give up much to get him. Because the point guard position is already occupied by an All-Star in Texas, and because Stephon Castle just won Rookie of the Year, it was hard to imagine the talented Dylan Harper making the roster.
That’s why the team listened to the various offers for this coveted pick. But in the end, no franchise was convincing enough in negotiations, so the Spurs made the most logical choice: selecting the point guard from Rutgers University. In a press conference, GM Brian Wright discussed the process that led to this decision.
Dylan Harper talks about his duet with Victor Wembanyama
“At this time of year, you have to follow the process. You have to pick up the phone and listen to other franchises, even though we knew pretty early on what we wanted to do. We knew the talent that would be available with the second pick. We listened to the proposals when they were made, but our decision had almost been made for a while.”
The Spurs listened to other franchises, but apart from an exceptional offer, they knew for a fact that they wanted Dylan Harper. With this pick, they’ll always have one, maybe two quality point guards on the court at all times, which is not too much in this league. Harper is ready to fit in, and is already looking forward to playing with Victor Wembanyama.
“My duo with Victor Wembanyama is going to be so special. What playmaker wouldn’t want to play with Wemby? He’s got all the qualities you look for in an inside player. He’s a truly unique player. […] But apart from him, I can’t wait to play with Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox. When you have that many ball-handlers on the floor, it creates space and makes life easy for everyone.”
Dylan Harper is looking forward to playing with Victor Wembanyama, like any self-respecting point guard. After talking about his passing skills before the draft, he’ll be able to apply them with his new pivot. He’s also looking forward to playing with De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, who will open up important spaces for him right up to the basket.
