Although the franchise wouldn’t want to splurge on the market again, the Warriors are likely to mount at least one trade this off-season. And it’s in the direction of departures that we should be looking.
Beaten by the Timberwolves in the second round of the playoffs, the Warriors remain confident about the future. The franchise obviously believes that Stephen Curry’s injury changed the outcome of the season, so the directors prefer to look ahead to 2026 with serenity. It has to be said that the arrival of Jimmy Butler last February did a lot of good.
The Dubs’ big trade has finally happened with the arrival of Butler. Golden State clearly needed a boost if they were to dream of the title, and it’s fair to say they’ve succeeded with the former Heat man. So we don’t know if they’ll have a real chance of winning anything, but the hope is there with this trade.
What moves will the Warriors make this summer?
Nevertheless, to give themselves the best chance of winning the title, the Warriors are expected to make further moves over the summer. The arrival of a pivot wouldn’t go amiss given Draymond Green’s limitations, while the franchise is looking for a defensive winger according to a few sources. And it could use Jonathan Kuminga for that.
As a restricted free agent for this summer, there’s every reason to believe that Kuminga will jump ship. Steve Kerr has often benched him, and despite some good performances, there’s a feeling that trust isn’t total between the two parties. According to Brett Siegel for ClutchPoints, we’re heading for a departure and a few franchises are already interested in signing him.
Brett Siegel : “The Nets, along with the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat, are three teams with preliminary interest in Kuminga ahead of free agency, sources said. Both Kuminga and the Warriors could come to an understanding on a new, fair contract, but the idea of exploring sign-and-trade opportunities seems like the best path for both parties.”
Given Kerr’s treatment of the player, it’s hard to imagine Kuminga returning for more years. Sign-and-trade is clearly the most likely scenario at present, and we now have several teams interested. It remains to be seen whether the Dubs will be able to find something suitable in return, with a pivot for example.
