Having exited the playoffs in the conference semi-finals, the Warriors are hoping to get off to a flying start next season in the title race. To do so, they are likely to look at a number of options, one of which is a champion with a tempting profile.
Virtually eliminated from playoff contention midway through the season, they managed to revive their fortunes thanks to a trade. This could give them some ideas for the upcoming off-season. The Warriors are likely to be active on the market again this summer, as Stephen Curry has more or less asked them to do. It remains to be seen which players will be targeted.
Warriors on the lookout for an attractive target?
As ambitious as ever, Golden State fans are unsurprisingly expecting big things in the coming weeks. Some are dreaming of the arrival of Giannis Antetokounmpo following his recent activity. But given the complexity of this ultra-competitive dossier, the Californian franchise could turn to another lead in the East. The Ringer’s Logan Murdock weighs in on the Zach Lowe Show:
Logan Murdock: Another player to keep an eye on for the Warriors is Derrick White. I think they’re keeping an eye on his situation right now, given that the league expects Boston to be forced to part with some of its players this summer. That’s the kind of player the Warriors will be looking for, someone capable of defending well and tempering the whole team.
A key member of the Celtics’ starting five, Derrick White once again proved his worth during the playoffs. What’s more, he just delivered the best regular season of his career in statistical terms (16.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists). However, his $28.1 million salary next year could pose a problem for Boston, whose payroll is already (too) substantial as it stands.
The C’s may be forced to part with one of their stars in the coming weeks. This explains the appearance of this rumour concerning White, whose profile as an excellent defender is very appealing to the Warriors. Problem: according to Marc Stein’s latest reports, it’s another Boston back who’s more likely to be in the hot seat:
Marc Stein: The Celtics’ precise determination to retain all their veterans is difficult to ascertain at present. That said, the trend is for Boston to be more open to making Jrue Holiday available on the trade market than Derrick White.
Could the Dubs thus divert their attention to Jrue Holiday, also an outstanding defender albeit older and more expensive? That remains to be seen.
