An attentive follower of NBA news, Kevin Garnett is above all keeping an eye on the Timberwolves’ playoff run. In fact, he recently took a closer look at the franchise and praised one of its members, using an amusing example linked to… Rudy Gobert.
Winner of his only NBA championship while playing for the Celtics, he remains associated with another team these days. In fact, Kevin Garnett himself makes no secret of his immense affection for the Timberwolves, who drafted him in 1995 and with whom he was voted MVP nine years later. No wonder, then, that he continues to follow the franchise’s results.
And it’s a safe bet that the last few days have taken a toll on his mood. Chris Finch’s men are coming off two losses to the Thunder in the opening game of the Western Conference Finals, and look to be on the wrong track in this series. Rudy Gobert, for his part, is having great difficulty expressing himself, both before and during games, and will have to pull himself together to reverse this unfortunate trend.
Kevin Garnett defends Anthony Edwards and mentions Rudy Gobert
Although he hasn’t been in the limelight against Oklahoma City so far, Gobert has nevertheless shown that he is capable of blazing a trail in these playoffs. This even earned him high praise from Draymond Green, considered one of his greatest rivals. Garnett, for his part, used the Frenchman’s recent exploits to endorse Anthony Edwards as the future face of the league. In his KG Certified podcast, he explains:
Kevin Garnett: If Anthony Edwards somehow manages to give Minnesota the first title in its history, I think he’ll reach a new sphere. I think he’ll be talked about differently around the league. Because not only does he have the charisma to be the face of the NBA, he also has the other elements necessary to become one.
He talks trash on the court, he always takes responsibility for what he says afterwards, and then he manages to carry the guys around him in his wake. I mean, we’re talking about Tyrese Haliburton, but Anthony Edwards carries his teammates too! Sometimes, Rudy Gobert thinks he’s Shaq, thanks to him! The guys around him follow him and I love that, so I think he’s got what it takes to become the face of the league.
It’s worth noting that KG isn’t the only one to predict such a future for Edwards. Dwyane Wade has also delivered a similar speech, making the young Wolves star the most credible candidate for future NBA headliner status. For that to happen, however, she’ll need to succeed in carrying Minnesota all the way to the title according to the Big Ticket, which is by no means shaping up to be an easy task as it stands.
