At the end of his 22nd season at the highest level, LeBron James has several options for his future. And while the Lakers await his decision, an insider has revealed an indiscretion that could be worth its weight in gold.

Since their elimination in the first round of the playoffs, rumors about the Lakers have focused on potential arrivals. It has to be said that the Lakers will have to make a number of signings this summer if they are to seriously contend for the title next season. As a result, Rob Pelinka is already working on ways to erase the shortcomings of the squad he has built so far.

However, the Angelino general manager does not yet know what budget he will have on the market. This will depend on the decisions made by certain team members during the off-season. These could test the free agent market and potentially pack their bags, leaving behind a place in the roster as well as precious dollars. Starting with LeBron James.

LeBron’s case more complex than it seems for the Lakers?

Under contract until 2026 with the Lakers, LeBron nevertheless has a $52.6 million player option for the coming season. This option could be honored, given its high value, or even declined in order to sign a new, even more lucrative lease. However, he could also choose to pack his bags. Jovan Buha of The Athletic didn’t rule out this possibility in his podcast:

Jovan Buha: I mean, I think there’s always a chance that LeBron could walk. As we’ve reported at The Athletic multiple times — and it hasn’t just been me, Sam Amick has also reported this — the relationship has been a little frosty at times. It hasn’t always been the warmest over the past couple of years.

An admission that could prove important in future negotiations.

Potentially frustrated by the departure of Anthony Davis or the inability of his managers to offer him a pivot worthy of the name, the King could hold it against his franchise and leave. Some have recently given him the same advice, inviting him to join a specific team where his title chances would supposedly be higher. All worrying signals for Purple & Gold fans.

That said, Jovan Buha was more reassuring in the rest of his speech, refusing to contemplate LBJ’s departure:

Jovan Buha: But I’ve said it before: I think LeBron’s going to be a Laker next year. The only question is whether he’s opting in or opting out and re-signing.
