After a long and hard-fought series against the Nuggets, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder will have to quickly turn the page and focus on the Conference Finals. And SGA will be particularly motivated, as he’ll be battling his cousin for a place in the Finals!
This Sunday, in the most important game of his career, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander proved to the world why he deserved the MVP award. Rather discreet in the first half, he was able to step on the gas at the right moment to put the Nuggets out of action. The point guard was expected to duel with Nikola Jokic, and in the end he delivered.
If Jalen Williams’ awakening was good for the Thunder, it was SGA who carried his team to victory with no less than 35 points, 4 assists, 4 steals and 3 rebounds, all at over 63% shooting success. When the Canadian is at this level, and when his team-mates stay the course defensively, OKC is hard to beat.
SGA talks about his duel with his cousin!
The Timberwolves are now the only franchise standing between the league’s leading scorer and the Finals. He’ll need to get into the swing of things quickly, as the first game takes place on Tuesday evening. He has already explained his impatience to reporters, as he will be up against his cousin Nickeil Alexander-Walker! Family honor will be at stake.
It’s going to be really fun to play Nickeil Alexander-Walker in the conference final. It’s hard to explain the feeling. We’re really close; he’s like a brother to me. We’ve been together at every stage of our lives, from the moment we first touched a ball to the NBA. It’s special to get to this point. But I’m going to try and rip his head off.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nickeil Alexander-Walker grew up together, went to high school together, were roommates during college, and now they’re going to be rivals for a place in the NBA Finals. The sure winner is Canadian basketball, which is guaranteed a representative in the final series of the season. And if the Pacers qualify with Bennedict Mathurin, there will be a ring in the North.
