Giannis Antetokounmpo has been all over the rumor mill, and has been approached by some Lakers fans. Could the Californian franchise try to attract him by sacrificing… Luka Doncic? An American journalist has weighed in on the subject.
Seeing them mentioned in any departure rumor is nothing new. Given the size of their market and their seductive power, the Lakers are after all a plausible destination for all NBA players. Including the biggest among them. The surprise arrival of Luka Doncic during the season has only reinforced this belief within the league.
After this flashy recruitment, the Angelinos now want to flesh out the supporting cast of their star backline. The positions to be strengthened in their squad are well known, as Rob Pelinka has stated that he wants to attract a 3&D winger as well as a pivot this summer. However, this doesn’t prevent the franchise’s fans from dreaming of other major arrivals, and therefore from taking a close interest in the case of… Giannis Antetokounmpo.
An insider gives his verdict on the potential Doncic/Giannis trade
Tired of the Bucks’ repeated failures in the playoffs, Antetokounmpo is allegedly questioning his future in Milwaukee. The Lakers Nation, for its part, was quick to hit on Antetokounmpo following his early elimination. Some of its members even recently submitted to Jovan Buha a hypothesis which would see LA recruit the Greek in exchange for… Doncic. The journalist analyzed this hypothesis in his podcast:
Jovan Buha: I think you could make the argument. I think Giannis is currently the better player of the two, which I don’t think has always been the case. Their level is pretty close in my eyes, but the most important factor for me is that Luka is four years younger than Giannis. And even if Giannis has managed to stay healthy throughout his career, you have to wonder how much longer that’s going to last.
I would rather bet on the long-term upside and the longer window with Luka.
While he would prefer to see Luka continue his career with the Lakers, Buha feels that this potential XXL swap could be justified. After all, in his opinion, Giannis has performed better than the Slovenian in recent months.
But instead of contemplating this improbable deal between two superstars, wouldn’t the Purple & Gold be better off thinking of a way to bring them together? At least, that’s what other American journalists think, who consider them capable of putting together an interesting enough package to pull it off. From a purely rational point of view, however, neither scenario seems realistic.
