In their quest for reinforcements for the coming summer, the Lakers will also need to ensure that they retain the important elements of their squad. This is the case for a recent recruit, who should finally extend his stay in the City of Angels.

The summer will be an important one for the Lakers, with the off-season marked by the presence of Luka Doncic. A good way for the front office to negotiate the arrival of certain free players, while Rob Pelinka will have to build a squad based on the Slovenian’s talents. The priority seems clear at this stage: a pivot, and a good one if possible.

With Alex Len and Christian Koloko last season, it’s hard to say that the Angelinos took this position seriously. Pelinka needs to find a real post 5 to combine more easily with Doncic on lobs, as well as to better protect the circle. However, this doesn’t mean that this position will be the only concern of the management.

A confirmed comeback for the Lakers?

If the Purple and Gold are looking for reinforcements, making sure certain players also decide to stay in Los Angeles is a good idea. Dorian Finney-Smith comes to mind. He joined the team this season and has been a delight ever since. The fans love him, but the player has a decision to make this off-season.

With a player option of 15.4 million for 2025-26, DFS may well refuse it and land freely on the market. He can then take a higher salary with the Lakers, or look elsewhere if the mood takes him. But according to Khobi Price, the player is happy today.

Dorian Finney-Smith asked about second half of season with Lakers: “Amazing.”

This doesn’t mean that DFS will come back for sure by accepting his player option, but the journalist is optimistic about it. He’s had a lot of fun since he arrived and he wants to stay. It’s good timing, as we already know that the Lakers want to keep him, Finney-Smith being a brilliant defender, as well as being capable of punishing from long range.

Journalist Dave McMenamin expects a big season from him for 2026:

McMenamin : “I think Dorian Finney-Smith will be a major contributor on this year’s Lakers team. He did not come in healthy and it took him some time to get some rhythm. With him having the comfort factor, the health factor on his side, I think he’ll be right there with being considered the (Lakers’) third-best player along with Austin Reaves.”
